What are High Tunnels?
High Tunnels are structures created using a steel skeleton covered with a skin of plastic to form a dome-shaped weather barrier – Sometimes referred to as hoop-houses. Uniquely different from green houses, the high tunnel “floor” contours with the landscape and is bare soil tilled to grow many different types of fruits and vegetables. The structures can vary in size from less than one-half an acre to 100 acres or more.
What are the benefits of a high tunnel?
High tunnel technology gives growers the ability to manage the weather by adjusting the micro-climate inside the tunnel. Tunnels provide growers the ability to extend the growing season (earlier spring and later fall), produce higher yields, reduced disease/pest problems, reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides, higher grade-out, and higher profitability.
Are all tunnels the same?
No. There are profound differences that range from material types and specifications, steel and plastic quality, design techniques and manufacturing practices. Often times, with experienced manufacturers, specifications change based upon regional weather characteristics or other unique requirements, and are built into the design of the tunnel.
Why Choose a Haygrove Tunnel?
Haygrove Tunnels are world leaders in high tunnel engineering, manufacturing and technology. Growers are currently using Haygrove’s 20 years of experience in 46 countries, to produce thousands of hectares of fruits and vegetables around the globe. Haygrove tunnels are built by farmers for farmers in a variety of sizes and configurations.
What’s the Best Tunnel for my Operation?
There are many different options based upon space, seasonal requirements, crop plans and your plans for growth. Options include:
The Super Solo Gothic (25′W x 100′L x 12′H) style is a true four season structure with extra-strength steel and 4′ spacing to handle midwest winters, and still vents to greater than nine feet to keep plants cool during summer operations.
The Haygrove Multi-bay Tunnels are great for getting started, and provide an excellent way for producers to expand while continuing to use the same design. Expand your production from one acre up to 100 acres.
What about the plastic?
It would be an incomplete conversation about high tunnels if we didn’t discuss the poly covering. There is really only one option to cover a tunnel – Luminance THB Poly – This light diffusing film has set the standard in high tunnel operations. The light diffusing technology scatters the light allowing it to penetrate deeper into the plant canopy. The added light achieves remarkable results – +20% increase in Strawberry production, and 40% increase in lettuce head weight are examples of the performance increase.
